Details of Disappearance

Bova, her husband and her sister went to dinner at the Red Lobster restaurant on east Fairmont Avenue in Lakewood, New York during the evening hours of June 7, 1997. She and her husband departed the eatery at approximately 10:30 p.m. Her husband told authorities that he and Bova had an argument after they returned to their apartment on New York Avenue and, at 2:00 a.m. on June 8, Bova went outside to smoke a cigarette and take a walk. She never returned and has never been seen again. Her husband notified family members of her disappearance a few hours later, and they searched Lakewood in their cars before calling police.

Several months after Bova's disappearance, a clump of long human hair was found in Chautauqua Lake and authorities searched the water for her remains. No evidence was found and the hair turned out not to be Bova's.

At the time of her disappearance, Bova worked at Kay Jewelers at the local mall. Her case remains unsolved.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Cattaraugus County Sheriff's deputies were called to the reservoir after a man fishing discovered the skeletal remains in the mud along the shore. The water in the reservoir had recently been lowered for the season and that may have been the trigger that exposed the remains.

Acting Sheriff Tim Whitcomb said currently there are no open missing person cases in Cattaraugus County, and that the department has a "real mystery" on its hands.

"We weren't able to throughly process the scene Saturday because of rain and the limited amount of sunlight we had," he said. "But that's exactly what we did Sunday until the sun went down."

He said that a number of items had been recovered from the area and treated as evidence, although he wouldn't discuss any specifics.

Whitcomb said that visual identification of the remains was impossible since the body was in an "advanced stage of decomposition."

"Mother Nature and the animals had spread it about, but we collected everything we could find," he said. "After ECMC, the remains will be going to a forensic anthropologist where full medical exams will be performed."

Canty, a convicted prostitute, had been strangled to death and dumped naked about 30 feet from River Road. Her mug shot showed a worn, tired-looking woman. She was 22.

The murder is now 16 years old, and has yet to be solved.

Town of Tonawanda police have a main suspect, who was known for promoting prostitution, but that suspect has never been charged, said Lt. James Szabo of the Town of Tonawanda Police Department.

After nearly a year and a half of thorough investigation by the department, the case went cold, Szabo said.

Homicides in the Tonawandas are an infrequent occurrence. But even more rare is the case that can’t be cracked, despite hours of investigations and mountains of paperwork.

“At first they’re handled like any other case,” Szabo said. “But once they go cold they’re filed away and worked on every several months by detectives.”

None of the three departments — the City and Town of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda — have special squads that deal with cold cases. Instead they’re handled by detectives who review cases every several months and wait patiently for new leads.

The Town of Tonawanda’s forensics laboratory recently tested several items of evidence and submitted them to CODIS, a DNA database, but there were no matches, Szabo said.

One of the biggest problems pursuing cold cases are differences between the way crime scenes are investigated now and the way they were handled years ago, said Detective Tim Toth of the Tonawanda City Police Department.

It’s North Tonawanda’s only homicide cold case.

“We handle all our investigations the same way,” said Lt. Tom Krantz of the North Tonawanda Police Department. “We keep going out, interviewing people with leads and discovering new leads.”

Krantz, who is assigned to the case and is working on it with the Niagara County

District Attorney’s office, goes through the file once every several months, he said.

But despite the advances in forensic technology, real life cold case investigations are far from their glamorized television counterparts, Toth said. A single strand of hair from a crashed car rarely meets a perfect match in a DNA database. Television creates unrealistic expectations for victims’ families used to watching Gil Grissom tie up investigations neatly within the hour.

Real investigations take time, Toth said. DNA tests are processed slowly and investigators must be cautious with their case so they hold up in court.

“Our goal is to catch the bad guy, ultimately, and to give closure for families that are involved,” Toth said. “That they know it’s our best effort.”

The Morningstar murder is the city’s only homicide cold case. Police had a main suspect who’s been looked at closely, Toth said. They’ve tried to interview the suspect several times, but have been unable to. The last word the department had was the suspect had moved out of the area.

Details of Disappearance

Scamurra was last seen at her family's Amherst, New York residence at approximately 9:30 p.m. on July 1, 1984. She has never been heard from again.

Originally, Scamurra's case was classified as that of a runaway, because she was having personal problems at the time of her disappearance. Investigators eventually came to believe she had met with foul play. Her family has reportedly refused to cooperate with police in her disappearance and has hired an attorney. They maintain their innocence in her case, however. Scamurra's case remains unsolved.

EAST AURORA, N.Y.-- On June 22, 1980, 48-year-old Nadine Steven's body was found in a creek in the woods off Luther Road; three decades later, her murder is still unsolved.

"I just remember she was a real sweet lady," said her granddaughter Amy McCain. McCain was 7 years old when her grandmother was found strangled.

"Her body was just left there, for days," McCain, who now resides in Arizona, said after contacting the 2 On Your Side Tipline.

"They had always told us there were no leads," said McCain, "there was nothing they could do but hope for a confession."

Steven's car was found almost a week later in a parking lot in Hamburg; family members say she had gone there to meet an ex-boyfriend, a man who was a suspect in the murder but was never charged. He died three weeks ago, and 2 On Your Side has decided not to name him.

2 On Your Side's Sarah Hopkins asked Detective Rick Daminski of the East Aurora Police Department if it would be fair to call that man the prime suspect.

"Out of fairness, I'd hate to point my finger at anybody at this point, because again it is still being investigated," said Detective Daminski.

Daminski has been investigating this case for the past few years with the help of the New York State Police. He says inheriting a case like this doesn't come without hurtles.

"Some of the people you can't interview because they're deceased," he said. "A lot of the people are elderly and they don't remember, they forgot. It's very tough."

But for McCain and her family, the wait has been brutal.

"It blows me away that there's been no closure to this in 30 years," McCain said.

Channel 2's Sarah Hopkins asked: "What is it that's taken so long for this case, and for the family to find some closure?

Detective Daminski: I think it's just the case in itself, and now we're trying to get a little bit of headway, and we're going further on this, and again actively investigating it."

Sarah Hopkins: Do you think that there was anything done in years past that maybe should have been done differently?

Detective Daminski: To Monday morning quarterback this, I can't say. You know I'm sure everybody would say they'd do things differently, or do it a different way, but from what they had to work with back then, they didn't' have the scientific evidence we have now that could be collected.

Evidence from the crime scene has been sent for DNA testing, police say.

Detective Daminski says they are working hard to be sure Stevens' family gets closure.
